ELSA and ERSA Information
At Holy Trinity C of E Primary School, we understand the importance of inclusion and the need to identify and support pupils who face barriers to learning and/or their wellbeing.
In order to support all pupils, we have an Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA). An ELSA is a warm, kind and caring person whose aim is to make children and young people feel happy in school and to reach their potential socially, emotionally and academically. They understand the barriers to learning that some children and young people might have and can help them with this.
They can support emotional development and help pupils cope with life’s challenges. ELSAs also help children find solutions to problems they might have.
At Holy Trinity C of E Primary School, we understand that relationships are key in helping children and young people to feel safe and nurtured. ELSA is about creating a reflective space for the child or young person.
If your child is identified by staff as someone who might benefit from work with our ELSA, you will be contacted and support offered. Equally, if you feel yourself that your child might benefit from working with our ELSA, contact our SENDCo who will talk through the programme with you.
At Holy Trinity C of E Primary School, we place a heavy emphasis on attendance. However, occasionally pupils display signs of Emotionally Related School Avoidance (ERSA). They experience difficulties attending school which can be linked to a range of factors. ERSA can range from children who are still attending school but present with anxiety to those with no attendance at school for an extended period.
We use a variety of resources and have in place a number of strategies to support children with ERSA. If you are worried about your child starting to show signs of ERSA, speak to the school Attendance Lead.
